Portable Painting, stuff on the go

DA_tactical_squad.jpgWhen I was emptying the cellar and putting the stuff into storage for the duration of the flood repairs I discovered a box labelled, MKVII Tactical Marines and in brackets (from starter sets). On opening it up it had loads of the single pose marine figures that I think came with Battle For Macragge (I bought two for the tyrannids) and another older version of WH40K (maybe).

Well, as I can't really do anything complex on my mobile painting platform I thought I'd give these a whirl using The Army Painter method alongside the Veterans I am also doing.

As ever, due to the temporary unavailability of Ringo's World proper, I am having to make do with substandard facilities - ie the living room. Spraying is a pain as it's pouring down with rain, so outside ain't an option, can't do it in the living room as Mrs Simpkins would not be too pleased so had to make do with down in the cellar - lighting is not good so the spraying did not go too well. Still, got a good enough surface to base coat though.

da_veterans.jpg I must say, The Army Painter Angel Green spray and Warpaints Angel Green ARE an exact match. One thing I have noticed, when you put the Warpaints paint on the figure it seems quite thin and translucent, after 12 hours drying though it really darkens up in to a strong solid colour. Is it just me? More on this in a future write up of the Veterans Squad project.

I am still a bit on the fence regarding The Army Painter Warpaints, they are not as 'creamy' as Citadel or Vallejo out of the pot. I don't think I'd use them for anything other than base coating, but then again I suppose they are designed to be used in conjunction with Quickshade so really they don't need to be anything other than a provider of solid strong colour as the Quickshade does the 'detail'. Like I've said previously, you ain't going to create a display standard paint job with Quickshade but for rank and file table top stuff it's fantastic.

In other news, I am hopefully going to get a couple of Windsor & Newton Series 7 brushes at the weekend, bit pricey I know but Kolinsky Sable is good stuff - hopefully Mrs. Simpkins won't veto a thirty quid outlay on a couple of brushes that will last for a good year or so. I also want to get an The Army Painter Uniform Grey spray from the Firestorm Games store .. maybe even get something from Forge World!

Finally, the new improved White Dwarf is out on Saturday - I remember the last time they changed the format back in the late 1980's - wonder if, like then, they change the price! It's GW, so I expect so, after all their shareholders probably need new Porsches.
